Great Big Sea

I would like to share with you, Gentle Readers, my adoration of the band Great Big Sea. As I mentioned in an earlier post, they are indeed my favourite band. I got interested in Great Big Sea after I picked up their second album , Up in 1995. It wasn't long after that that I saw them play a set on Parliament Hill for Canada Day and with that performance, I was totally hooked. These guys are awesome live.

Haling from the "tropical island of Newfoundland," Great Big Sea (GBS) is best described as a band that gives a folk-rock interpretation to traditional Newfoundland folk songs as well as performing their own material.

The band consists of founding members Alan Doyle (vocals, guitar, bouzouki, mandolin, also quite cute), Sean McCann (vocals, bodhran, guitar, tin whistle) and Bob Hallett (vocals, fiddle, accordion, mandolin, concertina, bouzouki, bagpipes). Newer members Kris McFarlane (drums, accordion, guitar, backing vocals) and Murray Foster (bass, backing vocals) round out the group.

Great Big Sea has been described as a band you experience, rather than listen to and anyone who has seen their live show would probably agree. They've just been one of those bands that picks me up when I'm down and are just a lot of fun to listen to.

This video is from GBS's 1995 release Up. Enjoy!
